2019-20 UNCW Memorable Moments

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCWSports.com is taking a look back at some of the memorable moments from the 2019-20 athletics year. Each sport will be featured with a memorable moment. 

A new moment will be featured on social media (@UNCWAthletics on Twitter and the UNCW Athletics Facebook page) and on UNCWSports.com every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the week.

Sept. 3: Montgomery's Triple-Double Leads UNCW Past Campbell
Brynn Montgomery's triple-double of 11 kills, 22 assists and 11 digs helps UNCW edge Campbell in five sets and is the first Seahawk triple-double since 2003. Montgomery would add two more triple-doubles to her credit that season.

Women's Soccer Memorable Moment
Oct. 13: Women's Soccer Blanks Drexel to Set Shutout Record
UNCW sets a program record by recording its fifth consecutive shutout as the Seahawks blank Drexel, 2-0, on Senior Day at UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks limit the Dragons to just three shots in the contest and junior goalkeeper Sydney Schneider earns her eighth career shutout.

Men's Soccer Memorable Moment 2019-20
Oct. 26: Men's Soccer Secures CAA Regular Season Title
The Seahawks ride a two-goal performance from senior forward Phillip Goodrum to a 3-1 victory over Drexel at the UNCW Soccer Stadium, clinching the CAA’s regular season title. It marks the fourth regular season championship for the Seahawks and their first since 2014.

Nov. 2: Evan Jones Collects All-CAA Honors in Cross Country
Evan Jones earns All-Conference honors on Nov. 2, 2019, at the CAA Cross Country Championships staged at historic New Market Battlefield near Harrisonburg, Va. The junior from St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, crosses the finish line in 12th place with a time of 25:31 after placing 27th place one year ago.

Jan. 25: Freshman Shykeim Phillips Helps Seahawks Stun Cougars At TD Arena
Sparked by a game-high 17 points from freshman guard Shykeim Phillips and a stellar defensive performance, the Seahawks stun host Charleston, 72-70, at TD Arena as both teams tie a bow on the first half of the conference schedule.

Feb. 7: Whimple, Cavanagh Shine At VMI Winter Relays
The triple jump duo of Tori Whimple and Julianna Cavanagh shines at the VMI Winter Relays. Whimple jumps 38-0 to take first place and climbs to third on UNCW’s career list, while Cavanagh comes in third place at 36-11.25 and rises to eighth on the career chart.

Feb. 16: Men's Tennis Edges CofC to Open CAA Campaign
The Seahawks open conference play by edging rival Charleston, 4-3, at Patriots Point in Charleston. UNCW wins the doubles point and splits the six singles matches for its first road victory of the new season.

Feb. 20-22: Arsenault Rewrites Records Book
Junior Evan Arsenault wins gold in the 50-yard Freestyle with a school-record time of 22.34 seconds at the CAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships in Christiansburg, Va. Arsenault topples the two-time defending champion while setting a new school standard.

Feb. 21-22: D'Alessandro Defends CAA 100 Breast Title
Junior Gianmichel D’Alessandro defends his 100-yard Breaststroke title at the CAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships when he clocks a time of 53.86 seconds in Christiansburg, Va.

Senior E.J. Green opened his senior campaign with the fastest 400 Meter Hurdle opener of his career (53.08) at the Bahamas House First Chance Meet in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Women's Basketball Memorable Moment
Feb. 28: Suggs Hits Milestone in Seahawks' Win Over Northeastern
Senior guard Lacey Suggs becomes the 17th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points as the Seahawks fly past Northeastern, 61-48, at Trask Coliseum. Suggs finishes the game with 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 at the free throw line.

Raquel Rooney digs an attack
Feb. 29: Rooney Enters All-Time Top-5 At UNCW In Wins
Senior Raquel Rooney moves into UNCW’s top-five all-time in wins with 37 victories as she pairs with Brynn Montgomery to breeze to a 21-14, 21-11 win over Chattanooga’s Sarah Root and Baylee Young in Macon, Ga.

Feb. 29: Lines Scales Long Jump Chart
Freshman Courtney Lines breaks the freshman record and moves up to third on UNCW’s all-time list by winning the women’s long jump competition with a leap of 19-2.75 at the Savannah State Relays.

Softball Memorable Moment
Mar. 6: Gamache Leads Seahawks to Doubleheader Sweep
Sophomore Janel Gamache blasts two home runs and drives in four runs to lead the Seahawks to a doubleheader sweep over Georgetown’s Hoyas and Presbyterian’s Blue Hose at Boseman Field in the UNCW Softball Invitational. Gamache slugs a two-run homer in each game to anchor the Seahawks’ 15-hit attack.

Mar. 10: Men's Golf Wins the Bash at the Beach In Playoff
Redshirt sophomore Austin Bonfiglio drains a 10-foot putt to give UNCW a sudden death playoff win over Jacksonville State to win the Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. UNCW makes up six shots over the final nine holes to force the playoff for the team’s lone tournament win of the shortened season.

Women's Golf Memorable Moment
Mar. 10: Women's Golf Rallies to Win River Landing Classic
Trailing by nine strokes going into the final round, UNCW fires a school-record 6-under-par 282 to capture the River Landing Classic with a one-stroke victory over USC Upstate. The Seahawks uses a 4-under-par 68 from sophomore Phu Khine to take the tournament title. A four-time CAA Golfer of the Week selection, Khine finishes in a tie for first place after carding an even-par 216 in the tournament.

Mar. 11: Suggs Sinks #19 East Carolina
The Seahawks rally three times against nationally-ranked East Carolina and Matt Suggs wins it with a dramatic three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning at Brooks Field.

Mar. 12: Matute Powers Seahawks Past Quinnipiac
The team finishes the shortened season on a high note by getting contributions from everyone in a 6-1 victory over Quinnipiac on March 12 in Orlando. Playing at the USTA National Tennis Center, Coach Hans Olsen’s club notches the doubles point and sweeps five of the six singles matches, including a straight set triumph by senior Celeste Matute at No. 1 singles.
