Championships Won And Records Fall

Three Seahawks won events at the CAA Championships on Friday

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Swimmers Gianmichel D'Alessandro and Will Countie and diver Kolbein Bjugan all won individual event championships to lead an impressive night for UNCW at the Colonial Athletic Association championships at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center.

The Seahawk men slipped to second with defending champion William & Mary taking the team lead while the UNCW women are in sixth.

"Tonight was a record-setting effort by our entire team," said UNCW Head Coach Jason Memont. "We broke three UNCW records, including a relay record for the men, and a freshmen record again for Henderson Louviere. It was a tremendous showing by everyone tonight as we dropped time and improved on our seeding across the board. I'm so proud of the effort and fight we have shown throughout the whole weekend. With one day left, we have to dig deep and put up some big swims in the morning to put ourselves in position to battle for a team title tomorrow night."

D'Alessandro, a junior, defended his championship in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 53.86 seconds, ranking second all-time at UNCW. Josh Rigsbee fashioned the third best time in UNCW's history in the event at 54.14 to finish second.

Countie, who already held the program's 100 Backstroke, earned the individual event championship when he clocked in with a winning time of 46.49. His time also ranks him 21st nationally and is a NCAA B cut qualifier.

Rounding out the impressive night was Bjugan, a freshman who finished off a sweep of the diving events, winning the 3-meter dive on Friday. Bjugan is the first Seahawk to sweep the boards since Dean Berman did so at the 2006 championships.

Trent Igoe added a third-place finish in the 3-meter board.

Adding impressive swims on the night were Louviere in the 400 IM (4th, 3:55.32, UNCW freshman record) and Evan Arsenault in the 200 Free (1:49.18).

The men's 400 Medley Relay of Countie, D'Alessandro, Louviere and Sean Cannon set a school record with a time of 3:12.48 and finished second in the session finale.
