Rooney Moves Up On Career Wins List

UNCW split a pair of duals at the Bears Beach Bash on Saturday

MACON, Ga. – UNCW split a pair of duals with first-year programs Chattanooga and Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday at the Bears Beach Bash.

The Seahawks saw their record move to 2-2 with the split of the duals while Chattanooga fell to 0-1 and Palm Beach Atlantic improved to 2-0.

Against Chattanooga, the Seahawks posted a 5-0 win. Freshmen Rachel Schaffer and Katie Lanz made their debut at the fifth pairing and posted an impressive 21-13, 21-14 win. Senior Raquel Rooney moved into a tie for fifth on UNCW's career wins list with 37, earning a win at the first pairing.

"It was great to see everybody executing against Chattanooga, and we got our first wins for newcomers Katie Lanz, Casey Goodwin and Brooke Hanshumaker," said Associate Head Coach David Fischer. "While we can play more cleanly, there was great focus and communication.

PBA edged the Seahawks in the second match of the day for both teams. The Sailfish won at the second, fourth and fifth pairings. Schaffer and Lanz picked up their second win of the day, also coming at the fifth pairing. Schaffer moved to 4-0 on the season with the victory.

The Seahawks close out their weekend with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday against host Mercer.
