Seahawks Double Up At Savannah Relays

SAVANNAH, Georgia – One week after capturing five events in their outdoor debut at Daytona Beach, the UNCW men's and women's track and field teams won 10 titles in the 2020 Tiger Relays on Saturday at Savannah State's Ted Wright Stadium.

Making their second appearance of the outdoor season, the Seahawks swept the men's and women's long jump and triple jump competitions and also won four relays.

Sophomore Kaylee Vannoy of Swansboro, N.C., took part in three gold medal finishes. She won the Women's Javelin competition with a throw of 106-7 and ran a leg on the winning Distance Medley Relay and 4x400 Relay units.

"We got better today as a team," said first-year head coach Jeff Klaves. "We competed and won both team titles at the meet. The relay environment of the meet allowed our team to battle together and continue to grow."

"Small breakthroughs are happening and I'm excited for the big jumps that will be coming soon.  We're learning to compete. This team is young and we're seeing it in practice. It's only a matter of time until we see it on the track or in the field events."

The Seahawks came in first place in the Men's 1,600 Sprint Medley Relay (Keandre Yeoman, Zachary Ray, Josh Cooper, Zeke Shore), Women's Distance Medley Relay (Sierra Koehler, Kaylee Vannoy, Gretchen Bingham, Summer Owens), Men's Long Jump (Da'Rod Crutchfield), Women's Long Jump (Courtney Lines), Women's Javelin (Kaylee Vannoy), Men's Triple Jump) (Owen Pelletier), Women's Triple Jump (Tori Whimple), Women's 4x800 Relay (Chloe Byrd, Lefler McManus, Ali Schutte, Summer Owens), Women's High Jump (Sarah Timberlake) and Women's 4x400 Relay (Aubrie Farwell, Kaylee Vannoy, Gretchen Bingham, Alexa Woltjen).

Whimple's 39-1 leap in the Triple Jump ranks fifth all-time and Timberlake's mark of 5-6 in the High Jump puts her in sixth place all-time.

Newcomer Courtney Lines went 19-02.75 in the Long Jump to move into third place on the all-time list.

The teams next host the Wendy's Seahawk Invitational on March 13-24, 2020, at the Harold Greene Track & Field Complex.

Head Coach Jeff Klaves Event Analysis

Sprints
EJ Green had a solid opener up in the high hurdles. Tori Whimple and Destiny Smith had a great short hurdle race. The freshman duo of Marcus Threatt and Taylen West are continuing to get healthy and their times are showing that.

Throws
Kaylee Vannoy is starting to figure out the rhythm of her new approach and won the meet in the Women's Javelin. Dylan Wood and Jon Lloyd hit 3 meter PR's in the Javelin and Discus.

Jumps
The women's jumps crew put up four top-10 all-time marks. Tori Whimple had a big season best and Julianna Cavanagh had an all-time best in the Triple Jump. Sarah Timberlake cleared 5-7 from a four-step today in the high jump. And Courtney Lines moved up to No. 3 all-time in the women's long jump and broke the freshman record with a jump of 19-2.75. We are making huge improvements while continuing to make technical adjustments.

Distance
Every distance runner ran two to three relays today and we used the meet to continue to improve our speed. It was exciting to watch every athlete compete and get after some fast relay times.

Multis
Ryan Hunt continues to show the work he's putting in during the week with a great season opener in the High Jump and personal record in the Long Jump.
