Seahawks Edge Cougars In Road Match

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Senior Daniel Groom became the fourth different player to clinch a match as the UNCW men's tennis team won its first road match of the spring season, 4-3, over rival College of Charleston on Sunday at Patriots Point.
 
The Seahawks evened their record at 4-4 and gained a split of their two-match southern road swing. The Cougars are 4-2 this spring.
 
In Sunday's match, the Seahawks secured the doubles point for the third time this season when Groom teamed up with sophomore Bruno Caula for a 6-3 victory against Charleston's Ben Cawston and Karl Mosterd at the No. 1 position.
 
The Seahawks won the first two singles matches off the court to jump out to a 3-0 advantage before the Cougars answered with a pair of wins at No. 6 and No. 3 singles.
 
Groom then clinched the match by trimming Johnny Wang at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to hike his record to 4-2 this season.
 
The Seahawks begin a two-match home stand on Friday, Feb. 21, when state foe UNC Greensboro pays a visit to the UNCW Tennis Courts for a 1 p.m. match.
