Seahawks Win Five Events In Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida – The UNCW men's and women's track and field teams captured first place in five events on Saturday at the Bahamas House First Chance Meet in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Making their outdoor debut and competing for the first time under new head coach Jeff Klaves, the Seahawks racked up 18 top-3 all-time performances at the ERAU Track & Field Complex. A total of 21 men and 23 women traveled to the Sunshine State for the event.

Senior E.J. Green (Men's 400 Meter Hurdles), sophomore Summer Owens (Women's 3,000 Meters), sophomore Jonathan Lloyd (Men's Javelin) and junior Sarah Timberlake(Women's High Jump) joined the Men's 4x100 Relay unit of Taylen West, Marcus Threat, Jr., Langston Samples and Josh Parks in claiming gold medals on Saturday.

"Now we know where we are and we're ready to get back to work to keep pushing the mark," said Klaves. "This team is hungry to make improvements and wants to put in the work. Multiple PR, Event Wins and Top 10 all-time marks and this is just the start! We're excited to get back to work."

Victoria Whimple jumped 38-08.75 in the Women's Triple Jump to rank sixth all-time at UNCW, while junior Sarah Timberlake cleared 5-7 in the Women's High Jump for the sixth best all-time.

The teams return home briefly before competing in the Savannah State Relays next weekend.

Coach Klaves Comments:

Jumps
The horizontal jumps and the high jump had great days from top to bottom. Da'Rod Crutchfield and Owen Pelletier had solid openers on the men's side and the women were feeding off each other's energy. In the high jump, Sarah Timberlake is a bar or two away from qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in Kentucky.

Sprints
The freshman crew of Taylen West, Marcus Threatt, Langston Samples and Josh Parks started the day off with a win in the Men's 4x100m Relay. Our team is loaded with young talent and it was great to see this freshman group start to build some trust in each other. On the women's side Makiya Spencer completed a quality double in the 400m and lead off leg in the relay (4x400m).

Throws
Jon Lloyd opened his sophomore campaign with an event win and a new PR of 50.75m in the Men's Javelin

Distance
     Summer Owens all-time best in the women's 3k with a 10:27.67

Multi's
Freshman Ryan Hunt had solid day in the sprints and jumps. He will look to improve on his throws in the coming weeks to become well-rounded in the decathlon.
