Jones Earns All-CAA Honors At CAA's

NEW MARKET, Virginia – Junior Evan Jones earned All-CAA honors while the UNCW men's and women's cross country teams finished sixth and ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association Cross Country Championships early Saturday at historic New Market Battlefield near Harrisonburg.
 
With the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, the league's cross country teams gathered on a brisk morning 19 miles north of Harrisonburg, Va., to traverse a course of rolling hills. It marked the third time in history for the conference race on the Civil War battlefield after the race was contested at the venue in 2004 and 2009.

William & Mary, ranked 15th in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region, continued its dominating run in the men's standings by easily beating second place Northeastern. The Tribe men have won 21 straight CAA titles and 28 overall - the most in league history.

Elon captured its first CAA women's cross country title behind overall winner Scholasticah Kemei and three other All-Conference performers.

The Seahawks, mirroring last year's results, came in sixth place in the 6K women's race and ninth place in the 8K men's competition.
 
"Our guys did a great job and finished well as a pack," said Austin Davis, UNCW's second-year head coach. "We had a big leap forward from last year. I'm very pleased with how the guys performed. Evan has stepped it up all year long and we're very happy for him.
 
"The women did a great job as well. We ran well as a group today. Summer has had a phenomenal year as well.
 
"We're moving in the right direction. We fell a little short on the teams we wanted to beat. I'm very pleased with the progress we've made. Next year, we want to place more guys in the All-Conference results and have an All-Conference finisher on the women's side."
 
Jones, from St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, vaulted up to 12th place this year with a time of 25:31 after placing 27th place one year ago. He became UNCW's first All-CAA performer since Alex Boseman in 2016.
 
Summer Owens was UNCW's top women's finisher for the fifth time this season. She covered the 6K in 22:26 for 45th place out of 75 runners.
 
Individually, Hofstra's Alex Masai won the men's individual crown for the second year in a row. He senior from Eldoret, Kenya, has won six titles in seven career meets with the Pride.
 
Kemei, who earned USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors on Sept. 3, clocked a 20:23 time and has won four of five races this fall. She is the second runner from Elon to win the individual women's title.
