Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Eric Rhew

Seahawks Shut Out Drexel on Senior Day

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW set a school record by posting its fifth consecutive shutout as the Seahawks downed Drexel, 2-0, in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks improved to 9-4-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the CAA with their fifth consecutive victory while Drexel dropped to 5-7-3 overall with a 1-4-1 mark against league opponents.

For the second consecutive game, UNCW scored in the opening minutes to a 1-0 lead. The Seahawks took advantage of a Drexel turnover in the fifth minute as redshirt junior forward Grace Hersey dropped a pass back to Ellis. Ellis sent an outlet pass to Hersey, who slipped through the Drexel defense to score on a 10-yard shot for her third goal of the season.

The Seahawks maintained the one-goal advantage until the 63rd minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after junior forward Audrey Harding was fouled inside the penalty area by Drexel senior goalkeeper Libby Baeza. Redshirt sophomore Morgan Nanni stepped up to take the penalty kick and drilled a shot inside the left post for her fifth marker of the year, giving UNCW a 2-0 cushion.

Led by junior goalkeeper Sydney Schneider, the Seahawks limited Drexel to just three shots in the victory, including one attempt in the second half. Baeza made five saves in a losing effort for the Dragons, who lost for the fifth time in the last seven matches.

Game Notes:
  • The Seahawks honored their six seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
  • UNCW has now held opponents scoreless for 452 minutes, 50 seconds, going back to the closing minutes of its Sept. 26 loss at Elon … It is the second-longest shutout streak in school history as the Seahawks held the opposition scoreless for 459 minutes, 42 seconds from Oct. 9-Nov. 6, 2015.
  • The Seahawks have won five consecutive games for the first time since a seven-game win streak from Sept. 4-25, 2015 … It is the 10th time in the program's 26-year history that the Seahawks have won five or more games in a row.
  • UNCW is now 6-1-0 at home this season and has outscored opponents by an 18-3 margin … Over the last two years, the Seahawks have a 10-2-1 mark on their home field.
  • UNCW also improved to 16-1-1 over the last two years when scoring first and is 14-1-1 when netting two or more goals in a game.
  • Nanni becomes the first UNCW player to convert a penalty kick since Molly McGarry on Oct. 21, 2018 in a 4-3 overtime victory against Towson.
  • Schneider recorded the eighth shutout of her college career, moving into sole possession of seventh place on the Seahawks' all-time list.
Up Next: The Seahawks resume their schedule on Sunday, Oct. 20, when they visit Hofstra for a 1 p.m. CAA contest against the Pride.
