A native of Delco, N.C., T. Eugene Dew attended N.C. State University and served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force before achieving success in the petroleum business. It was through his involvement in that enterprise that he helped UNCW's first athletic director, William J. Brooks, build the program.

With Dew's contributions, Brooks cleared a swampy area off South College Road and developed the physical foundation for the athletic program. Baseball was one of Dew's favorite pastimes and he helped Brooks erect one of the top baseball facilities in the country.

Dew, who was inducted posthumously, worked closely with two of the institution's foremost leaders, Dr. William H. Randall and Dr. William H. Wagoner, former provost Dr. Charles Cahill and Brooks in promoting the program in the early beginnings.
