Janet Johnson, who achieved All-American status as a swimmer 13 times during her four-year career with the Seahawks, was one of the pioneers in women’s swimming at UNC Wilmington.

The breaststroke specialist from Fayetteville, N.C., served notice immediately that she would be a key contributor to Coach Dave Allen’s team in 1980 when she earned All-American designation in the 50 yard breaststroke, 100 yard breaststroke, 200 yard breaststroke and 200 yard medley relay at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Championships.

She was an AIAW All-American again as a sophomore and junior before picking up National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-America honors in six events in 1984.

Johnson, or “J.J.” as she was known, was an early member of the school’s ROTC program. She served as Cadet Commander of the ROTC Corps of Cadets and won the George Catlett Marshall ROTC Award in 1983. She was named to the 1983 edition of both Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities and Outstanding Young Women of America.
