UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame
As UNC Wilmington’s only NCAA Division I All-American in swimming, Sam O’Leary’s legacy is a strong one.
The Williamsville, N.Y., native became the school’s first NCAA Division I All-American in 1982 when he finished 11th nationally in the 100-yard butterfly. He was also a three-time Easterns champion in the butterfly in 1980 and 1982.
O’Leary still owns the school records in the100 and 200 yard butterfly, testimony to his talent in the pool.
He received a fellow award from the National Recreation and Parks Association in 1992, and has been very active with UNCW’s Onslow County Alumni Association since his graduation in 1983.
