Seahawks Down Monarchs In Preseason Finale

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman defender Jake Shannon headed in a goal in the 29th minute to give the UNCW men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion in the preseason finale at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

The Seahawks claimed two of three exhibitions in their tune-up for the regular season, which begins on Thursday, Aug. 25, at American. The Monarchs turn to their season opener at home versus George Mason on Friday, Aug. 26.

Shannon's header marked the second straight goal scored by a UNCW rookie following Ryan Greener's marker in Tuesday's scrimmage against Mercer. The score came off a corner by Pep Casas, who delivered a ball to Josef Hefele. The sophomore defender served it up for Shannon to knock in.

UNCW, who used 19 players, outshot ODU, 8-4. The Monarchs held the advantage in corner kicks by a 12-7 margin.
