UNCW Handles Mercer, Falls To USM

MACON, Ga. – The Seahawks split another pair of Sun Belt Conference duals on Saturday, topping Mercer and falling to Southern Miss by the identical scores of 4-1.

UNCW moved to 9-15 overall and 3-3 in the SBC.

Against Mercer, UNCW built a 2-1 lead after three matches, and the pairing of Gabby LaPata and Sarah Thompsonprovided the clinching point at the second pairing. LaPata and Thompson cruised to a 21-12, 21-14 win over Mercer's Kristoi Talocka and Riley Milner.

Southern Miss earned a 4-1 win with straight-set victories in three of the four pairings it won. LaPata and Thompson extended their match to three sets before bowing, and Lyvia Trimp and Gracie Sistrunk posted the only Seahawk win at the number one pairing.

UNCW next hosts Coastal Carolina and the College of Charleston on Apr. 10-11. The teams will split the weekend between sites in Wilmington, with the Shoreline Sports Complex hosting three matches on Apr. 10 and Capt'n Bill's Backyard Grill and Volleyball Facility the following day.
