Sandy Hawks Open With Sweep of Cougars

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW opened its season on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Charleston by the identical scores of 4-1 in beach volleyball action at the Shoreline Sports Complex.

UNCW's Gracie Sistrunk and Lyvia Trimp won both of their matches to run their winning streak, which dates back to last season, to 27 consecutive outings.

In the first duel of the day, the Seahawks earned wins at the fourth and fifth pairings. Sistrunk and Trimp clinched the win at the number one pairing, 21-16, 21-16.

In the second dual, Gabby LaPata and Hannah Parkinson won a three-setter, taking the final game, 15-8, to clinch the match and the sweep.

Traci Schrock and Alivia Hamel won both of their matches for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks have won their last 14 outings against the Cougars and improved to 20-15 in the series.

The Seahawks host an exhibition tournament on Saturday against the College of Charleston, beginning at 9 a.m.
