ELON, N.C. – UNCW men's tennis senior Alexander Thompson posted a 4-0 record and prevailed in a three-set thriller to claim the Flight C singles title at the Elon Invitational.
Thompson defeated Carlos Victor Ferreira Gonzalez (ETSU) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the final on Sunday afternoon. Thompson outlasted 15 total competitors in the Flight C bracket over a three-day span.
Three of the four victories for Thompson were in three sets, highlighted by come-from-behind victories in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals.
Thompson qualified for the final with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 against Christopher Rodi (Elon) in the semifinal round.
In the top doubles flight, Alex de Gabriele and Jordi Domenech earned two victories against teams from Virginia Tech before falling to Jordan Chang/Nicolas Kotzen (Columbia) 6-3 in the final on Sunday morning.
In the top singles flight, de Gabriele went 3-1 overall, and Domenech went 2-1. They each earned a victory against Veljko Krstic (Elon), a two-time All-Coastal Athletic Association first-team selection.
The Seahawks will compete at the Porter's Neck Invitational from Sept. 19-21.
