WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW men's tennis earned six All-CAA honors, highlighted by two major awards, the conference announced Friday.
Lukas Steffen was named CAA Player of the Year, while freshman
Tomas Marin earned CAA Rookie of the Year honors.
Steffen becomes the fourth Seahawk in program history to earn CAA Most Outstanding Player honors and marks the third consecutive season UNCW has had a recipient.
Steffen finished the season 15-5 in singles and 9-9 in doubles. He was named CAA Player of the Week twice and earned Most Outstanding Player honors at the CAA Championship, while also garnering All-CAA First Team singles recognition. Playing primarily at court one, Steffen posted a 14-4 record, highlighted by a three-set win over No. 81 Yassine Dlimi of No. 15 UCF, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, in February.
Other notable victories included a 6-4, 6-3 win over Worthington of Wichita State (No. 60), a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 decision against Bouchet of VCU, and a 7-6, 6-3 win over Henceroth of No. 13 South Carolina.
Marin posted a 9-7 singles record and went 6-5 in doubles. In the CAA semifinals, Marin delivered the deciding point on court five in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory to send the Seahawks to their sixth consecutive championship match.
Alex de Gabriele and
Jordi Domenech earned All-CAA Second Team singles honors. De Gabriele went 12-9 in singles across courts 1-4, while Domenech posted a 10-11 mark.
The doubles teams of
William Dean and Steffen, along with
Brady Hussey and de Gabriele, were named to the All-CAA Second Team. Dean and Steffen went 8-9 across courts one and two, while Hussey and de Gabriele finished 8-7 on court one. Hussey and de Gabriele were also named CAA Doubles Team of the Week on March 31.
