Fischer Named Head Beach Volleyball Coach

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW Director of Athletics Michael Oblinger has announced the hiring of David Fischer to serve as head coach of the beach volleyball program.

"I'm excited to have David's leadership as we start a new era here at UNCW!," said Oblinger. "It has been a priority for me to split the indoor and beach programs since stepping onto campus. We will continue to be competitive on the court and in the classroom, this is just the beginning."

Fischer served as an assistant in the volleyball program since its first season in 2016 and helped the Seahawks to a 136-124 overall record in nine seasons.

UNCW posted a 22-12 mark last season and reached the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Seahawks were 10-3 against members of the SBC last spring.

Gabby LaPata and Sadie Sharkey were honored as the SBC's Team of the Year, and both were first-team All-Conference selections. Gracie Sistrunk and Bri Haggerty, meanwhile, we selected for the second team.

"I look forward to building a beach program that competes on the national stage, one that will continue to shine in the classroom in our growing and prestigious university," said Fischer. "More importantly, I hope to develop leaders and to help them become lifelong learners and competitive athletes.

"I am proud to be at the helm as UNCW is dedicating a head coach for the beach volleyball program. Thank you to the search committee and those who reached out on my behalf throughout the process. I'm excited for the journey!"

Fischer becomes the third head coach in the program's history following Amy Bambenek and Dottie Hampton.
