Sandy Hawks Win Two At The Palmetto Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – UNCW edged UT Martin and blanked Mercer as the Seahawks swept their matches on Sunday at the Palmetto Invitational at Wheeler Beach Park.

With the sweep, the Seahawks extended their record to 17-8 overall and 9-2 against Sun Belt Conference opponents. The 17 wins are second most in the program's history dating back to 2016.

Gabby LaPata and Sadie Sharkey won both their matches to improve to 18-7 on the season. In two seasons a pair, they have fashioned a 34-19 record, all at the top pairing in the lineup.

Sharkey also moved into third on UNCW's career wins list with 58.

In a 3-2 win over UT Martin, Ellie Bucci and Gracie Sistrunk clinched the victory at the third pairing, beating UTM's Ryan Rednour and Addy Vaughn 21-13, 21-14. Bucci and Sistunk also clinched the 5-0 win over Sun Belt rival Mercer.

The Seahawks next visit Mount Pleasant, S.C., on Apr. 12-13 for four duals hosted by the College of Charleston. UNCW opens its final tournament before the Sun Belt Conference Championship tournament on Friday against North Florida at 11 a.m.
