Seven Event Wins for Track and Field at ECU

GREENVILLE, North Carolina – The UNCW men's and women's outdoor track and field teams continued their spring with a strong two-day performance at the Bill Carson Invitational hosted by East Carolina at Minges Family Field at Bate Foundations Track & Field Facility.

The Seahawk men won the event with 206 team points, edging Mount Olive (163), East Carolina (144) and NC State (16). The UNCW women finished second with 136 points behind the host Pirates (311).

Individually, the Seahawks claimed seven first-place finishes as well as two runner-up performances. Additionally, six separate athletes soared into the school's top 10 all-time leaderboard in five events.

UNCW's Owen Marish was the lone UNCW athlete to claim two event wins in the Men's 1,500 Meters (3:56.65) and the Men's 800 Meters (1:57.96). Jesse Helton, meanwhile, used a 16.39m throw to win the Men's Shot Put and placed second in the Men's Discus (48.64).

Other Seahawk winners included Courtney Lines (Women's Long Jump – 6.11m), Rebekah Smith (Women's High Jump – 1.65m), J.T. Allen (Men's 110m Hurdles – 13.73), Nickolis Anderson (Men's 400 Meters – 46.97).

Fifth-year Mackenzie Townsend took second in the Women's 400 Meters with a 57.59 time.

The Seahawks next turn their attention to the Duke Invitational from Apr. 11-13 in Durham.

Head Coach Jeff Klaves Says:

"What a great day to be a Seahawk after a great team competition. We brought the entire team to ECU this weekend, and say our senior class is leaving a strong and united legacy. Our attitude and togetherness were on display more than any result or time. The program is in a good place because of the time and commitment our senior class has poured into this team.

"In the field, Consistent patterns are leading to more breakthrough performances. On the trackside, there is no doubt that we had a couple of performances that will be NCAA first-round performances. We are in a heavy competition phase. We're just building more and more confidence as we continue our rise."
