ELON, North Carolina – Sophomore Jesse Helton established a new school record in Men's Shot Put as the UNCW men's and women's outdoor track and field teams continued their seasons at the Elon Phoenix Invitational on Friday.
Helton won the shot put with a 54-9 mark and was one of four top-ten performances by the Seahawks, who competed with 16 other teams at the single-day meet at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex, which will host the CAA Championships in May.
Other top-ten performers included J.T. Allen's 14.03 time in the 110-meter hurdles that won the event and sits third on UNCW's all-time list. Sophomore Cameron Wright took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.26 time that ranks sixth on the Seahawk leaderboard. Freshman Quinn Broderick ascended to seventh all-time in the men's javelin with a 192-1.75 throw.
In total, the Seahawks registered six event wins in the men's 400-meter dash (Dalton Zimmerman – 49.21), 800-meter run (Owen Marish – 1.56.50), 110 Meter Hurdles (J.T. Allen – 14.03), Shot Put (Helton – 16.69m) and javelin throw (Ryan DeBarber – 61.27m). Freshman Isabella Borelli claimed the women's 800 meters with a 2:18.22.
The Seahawks continue to compete next week at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State.
Coach Jeff Klaves Says:
"Today was a great opportunity to get to the site of the conference championship. The meet did everything it was supposed to in terms of getting the lay of the land as well as partake in a competitive opportunity. The highlight of the day was Jesse Helton breaking the shot put record. That was one that we just truly felt well was coming. He was continuing to put some great things together at practice and the day before was just locked in.
"This proves we're putting ourselves in the right positions. We had some really good highs. Our men's hurdle team continues to show that they are a national-caliber group with great performances behind JT Allen and Cameron Wright today. Other breakthrough performances include Broderick moving up on the top-10 all-time list. No ceilings continues to be our mission statement because we know we're on the rise."
