Sandy Hawks Split Matches At Stetson

Bucci takes over as UNCW's career wins leader

DELAND, Fla. – UNCW split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Stetson Spring Invitational, topping Sun Belt rival Charleston, 4-1, but coming up short to Jacksonville, 3-2, at the Cooper Beach Courts.

The Seahawks went 1-3 in the tournament and moved to 10-5 on the season.

With four wins this weekend, Ellie Bucci became UNCW's career leader with 60 wins, surpassing Ashley Thompson, who tallied 56 wins from 2020-23.

Against Jacksonville, UNCW dropped its matches on courts four and five before Gabby LaPata and Sadie Sharkey earned a 24-22, 21-16 win over Anna Erickson and Olivia Szyszkiewicz at the top spot in the lineup.

Bucci and Sarah Thompson fashioned a three-set victory at the number three pairing to knot the score at 2-all. The pair owns a record of 13-2 this season.

JU, however, claimed the deciding point at the second pairing, winning the third set, 15-13.

UNCW posted its fourth win of the season against Charleston earlier in the day. The Seahawks posted a 4-1 win, taking all four matches from the first through the four pairings.

UNCW heads to Huntsville, Ala., for four Sun Belt Conference, matches against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Monroe on Mar. 23, and Georgia State and Southern Miss on Mar. 24.
