Beach Volleyball Falls Twice In DeLand

DELAND, Fla. – UNCW opened its appearance at the Stetson Spring Invitational with a pair of 4-1 setbacks to nationally-ranked Stetson and North Alabama on Friday at Cooper Beach.

The losses moved UNCW's record to 9-5 on the season.

Against 18th-ranked Stetson, the Seahawks took the Hatters to three sets on three courts but fell in all three in a 4-1 loss. Sadie Sharkey and Gabby LaPata extended SU's Tori Clement Shae Henson in three sets, falling 23-21 in the third.

Ellie Bucci and Sarah Thompson picked up UNCW's lone win in the match, sweeping Stetson's Julia Czurylo and Lauren Della, 22-20 and 21-15.

Against North Alabama, who carried a 9-3 record into the tournament, four of the five matches went the distance, and the Lions claimed all four.

Bucci and Thompson again earned UNCW's only win in the match with a 22-20, 21-16 win at the fourth position of the lineup.

UNCW takes on the College of Charleston and Jacksonville on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
