Lines Captures Fourth Straight CAA Gold Medal in Long Jump

NEW YORK, New York – UNCW's Courtney Lines captured her fourth consecutive Women's Long Jump gold medal at the 2024 Coastal Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships at The Armory in New York City.

Lines ran her CAA Long Jump titles to four straight with the previous two indoor (2023, 2024) and outdoor (2022, 2023) events and will aim to make it five in a row at the CAA Outdoor Championships in May. The Leland, N.C., product achieved a 6.17 meter jump to top the 28-individual Long Jump field.

"The goal was to create a series. I knew that if I could get a six-meter jump in my first attempt that would secure me three more jumps for finals and then I could build from there," said Lines on her strategy. "With my first jump being 6.03 meters I was able to bring more speed and power to my next two jumps. This resulted in my 6.17 m jump that won me the indoor long jump."

The event concluded on Friday with the 4x400 meter relay team of Janiyah FieldsAvery Rueckert, Nasiah Ferguson and Mackenzie Townsend setting a new school record with a 3:43.37 time to claim second in the event with the Silver Medal

The previous 4x400 meter relay record had been set at the Doc Hale Invitational earlier this month by the same foursome.

"Championship season brings out championship type performances and our ladies showed up in a big way this weekend," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "We talked about what we could control and how we wanted to handle ourselves at this year's Indoor CAA Championships and we are proud of our performances.

"Making a championship final in the CAA is as competitive as it comes and for us to leave with two podium performances reinforces that we are doing the right things to keep pushing our program forward."

Lines and the 4x400m team headlined a strong two-day performance by the Seahawks, who totaled 24.5 team points, in which numerous athletes reset the school leaderboards or achieved personal bests.

Ferguson rewrote the school record book with a 55.54 time in the 400 meter preliminaries, which also represented a new personal record. Graduate student Townsend also went under the previous indoor 400 meter record with a 56.13 with both Ferguson and Townsend qualifying for finals.

Freshman Emma Crozier-Carole established a new first-year best with 3,143 points in the pentathlon and also checks in at No. 2 overall on UNCW's all-time list. The Linwood, N.J., product finished eighth in the event.

Redshirt freshman Summer Herbertson climbed to No. 2 All-Time in the 3,000 Meters with 10:09.98 mark which is also the best among freshman.

The Seahawks' strong performance will now transition to the 10-meet outdoor season which begins with the UNCW Seahawk Invitational from Mar. 1-2 at the Harold Green Track & Field Complex.

UNCW returns six NCAA outdoor qualifiers – Lines (Long Jump), Josh Parks (110m Hurdles), Nickolis Anderson (400m), Donovan Lara (High Jump), Ryan DeBarber (Javelin) and Miles Higgins (Javelin) - from 2023.

"Indoors has the team inspired and ready to go after more.  2024 will go down in history as the first time we made a CAA running event final and the first time we podiumed in a running event, "said Klaves. "We get to keep this momentum rolling with our outdoor season starting right away next on March 1-2.  The UNCW Seahawk Invitational is a two-day meet where we will recognize our seniors , welcome all our alumni back to campus, and induct four outstanding into the UNCW Cross Country / Track and Field Hall of Fame."

"We are proud of the legacy this class of 2024 group is leaving on the program and look forward to celebrating all these moments with our extended Seahawk Family!"
