Outdoor Track & Field Announces Schedule

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW Head Track and Field Coach Jeff Klaves has unveiled the 2023-24 outdoor schedule for the men's and women's programs highlighted by the UNCW Seahawk Invitational in early March.

The men and women will tackle up to 10 meets during the outdoor season, which includes the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 10-11 in Elon, N.C., the NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary Round on May 22-25 in Lexington, Ky., and the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.

The outdoor season starts when UNCW hosts the Seahawk Invitational from March 1-2 at the Harold Green Track & Field Complex.

"We look forward to kicking off our outdoor season with our Home Meet," said Klaves. "This is our senior day, alumni weekend and a chance for us to recognize those that will be going into our Team Hall of Fame."

The schedule includes trips to regional schools Coastal Carolina, Duke, East Carolina, Elon and NC State as well as a trip north to compete in the Penn Relays hosted by Penn in Philadelphia, Pa., and south to the East Coast Relays hosted by North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

"The addition of Penn Relays and the East Coast Relays in late April shows the development of our program," Klaves said. "These are two elite meets near the championship segment of the season where the best in the country compete."

On the women's side, UNCW returns four All CAA performers in Elise Hall, Jordyn Robbins, Courtney Lines, and our women's 4x100m Relay which consisted of Janiyah Fields, Brynn Sheffield, Amanda Ruffin and Courtney Lines.

"Our goal is to be competitive at the conference level and Beyond. The championship and elite level performances we are having on the team are happening more often and we look to build on our success year to year."

Lines has won three straight CAA Championships in the women's long jump and looks to maintain that standard to put her in a position to be one of the NCAA's best jumpers.

A local product from nearby Leland, N.C., Lines finished 21st overall in the long jump in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Round last May. The fifth-year registered marks of 19-9.50, 19-0 and 18-3.75 in her three jumps to wind up 21st in the field of 48 jumpers.

"We are thrilled to have Courtney back for her fifth year with us. She continues to improve year to year, and we look forward to another season of opportunities to prove what she is capable of."

On the Men's side, UNCW led the conference with five NCAA Qualifiers that competed at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Preliminaries, highlighted by Josh Parks who became the first Seahawk in 17 years to earn a berth to the NCAA Division I Track & Field National Championships last season.

Parks captured 21st place at the NCAA Finals with a 13.99 time in the Men's 110m Hurdles to earn Honorable Mention All-American distinctions. The other NCAA Qualifiers were:  Nickolis Anderson (400m), Donovan Lara (High Jump), Ryan DeBarber (Javelin) and Miles Higgins (Javelin).

"Josh has inspired the team to believe that we can compete with the NCAA's best right here at UNCW. Two years ago, Josh was trying to earn a spot at the NCAA First Rounds, and now he helped lead a men's group that had five NCAA Qualifiers last year," said Klaves. "I used to say we were "Small but elite" but now I truly feel that has transcended to an elite mindset across the board on this Men's team.

"The mission statement this year is "No Ceilings" and we believe we are a program on the rise. I look forward to leading this group, they have been working hard and are ready to compete!"
