Seahawks Win Three Events at VMI

LEXINGTON, Virginia – UNCW's Courtney Lines (Long Jump), Janiyah Fields (200 Meters) and Bailey Tart (Pole Vault) claimed first place in their respective events as the Seahawks' women's indoor track and field program closed out a two-day meet at the VMI Winter Classic on Saturday.

Lines captured her second Long Jump crown of the indoor season after opening the slate with the top jump at Clemson in December. The Leland, N.C., product recorded the third-best mark in program history with a 19-08.25 leap at VMI.

Fields' 24.92 time in the 200 Meters helped capture her first event win of the 2023-24 season. Freshman Avery Rueckert ascended to ninth all-time on UNCW's top ten list with a 25.37 time.

Tart established a new personal record in the pole vault with a 12-02 mark that also represented the third-highest vault in the indoor program's history.

"Each meet has a purpose and helps us build to where we want to go. This week's theme was Win or Learn," said UNCW Head Coach Jeff Klaves. "Win the rep, win the heat, win the event and if we miss, let's learn something about ourselves to help us be prepared for the next opportunity. We want to keep stacking win's together to keep pushing us where we want to go."

Senior Rebekah Smith's 5-01.75 High Jump performance earned her a second-place finish while the foursome of Chandler Coughlin, Miquela Hunter, Claire Carmichael and Summer Herbertson were also the runner-up in the Distance Medley with a 12:51.21 time.

Other top 10 performances included senior Mackenzie Townsend's 58.12 mark in the 400 Meters that placed her eighth on UNCW's leaderboard while the team of Coughlin, Carmichael, Taylor Rand and Ashley Robey achieved a 9:52.52 time in the 4x800 Relay that placed them in the Seahawk record book.

"We are excited about the work this team is putting in," continued Klaves. "We have athletes hitting personal and all-time bests while we are still developing out technical models, which is a great sign for the season to come. The things we are seeing in practice are translating to the meets."

UNCW is back in action at the Doc Hale Elite Meet hosted by Virginia Tech from Feb. 3-4.
