Beach Volleyball Falls Twice on Friday

Thompson splits matches to move to within one of tying career wins mark

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UNCW dropped a pair of duals on Friday to Sun Belt Conference rival Mercer, 3-2, and nationally-ranked North Florida, 5-0, at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex.

The Seahawks slid to 10-11 with the pair of setbacks while Mercer improved to 9-19 and #19 North Florida raised its record to 17-6.

UNCW senior Ashley Thompson and Bri Haggerty split their matches on the day. The pair rallied to win the final two sets against Mercer to improve to 9-0 at the third pairing this season. Thompson and Haggerty were moved to the second pairing against the nationally-ranked Ospreys and fell in three sets for the loss.

Thompson now needs one win on Sunday to tie the program record for wins at 50.

Posting a win in the Mercer dual was UNCW's stop pairing of Sadie Sharkey and Gabby LaPata. Trailing 1-0, the pairing rolled to a 21-8 win in the second set before edging the Bears, 18-16, in the third for the win to go to 12-8 on the season.

UNCW opens the final day of the event with 19th-ranked FIU on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by a noon match with St. Leo.
