Lifrieri Lifts Seahawks To Series Win Over Aggies

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Dillon Lifrieri collected three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs while Luke Craig delivered 3.1 stellar innings out of the bullpen as UNCW earned another Colonial Athletic Association series win on Sunday with an 8-4 win over visiting North Carolina A&T at Brooks Field.

The Seahawks (18-10) pushed their record to 9-3 in the league and enter next weekend in second place. The Aggies dipped to 13-14 with the road loss and 6-6 in the CAA.

Lifrieri raised his batting average to .291 with his three-hit outing. In his first at-bat of the game, he crushed his fifth round tripper of the season to left. He added a two-out, two-run single in the sixth as UNCW expanded its lead to 6-3.

Kevin Pitarra and John Newton both added two hits for the Seahawks. Pitarra is now hitting .362 while Newton checks in at .366.

Craig (3-0) entered the game in the fourth and cruised into the seventh. He struck out two, walked none and allowed a run on one hit while picking up his second win of the week. He also earned the win against eighth-ranked East Carolina earlier in the week.

Canyon Brown had two hits for the Aggies, who grabbed an early 2-0 lead into the top of the first. TJ Ash added a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season that gave NC A&T a 3-2 advantage in the fourth inning.

NCAT starter Jaheim Brown (1-3) took the loss while pitching into the seventh inning. Brown surrendered four runs on eight hits.

The Seahawks visit conference-leading Elon next weekend for a key series in the CAA standings. The series opens with a 6 p.m. start on April 7.

How it happened: UNCW sent eight hitters to the plate in the sixth inning, pushing four of them across to take a 6-3 lead. Jac Croom led off the inning with a game-tying home run, his fourth of the season, off the light tower pole in right center. The Seahawks loaded the bases later in the inning for Taber Mongero, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Alec DeMartino with the go-ahead run. Lifrieri gave UNCW some separation later in the inning with a two-run single.

Notes: UNCW hit .333 in the series while limiting the Aggies to a .226 average … The Seahawk bullpen combined for a 1.50 earned run average and .184 batting average during the series … Newton now has a five-game hitting streak while DeMartino has hit safely in four straight.
