Eighth-Inning Surge Lifts UNCW To Road Win At Elon

Seahawks and Phoenix split Sunday doubleheader

ELON, N.C. – Dillon Lifrieri and John Newton both homered in a three-run eighth inning to propel UNCW to a 7-6 win over Colonial Athletic Association leader Elon and gained a split of a doubleheader on Sunday at Latham Park. Elon opened the day with a 3-1 win.

The Seahawks improved to 19-11 with the road win and 10-4 in the league. Elon, meanwhile, ran its record to 21-10 and 11-3 to remain at the top of the CAA standings.

Lifrieri gave the Seahawks a 6-5 lead with one out in the top of the eighth with his seventh homer of the season and his second on the day. Taber Mongero singled to open the inning and two batters later, Lifrieri homered on the first pitch he saw. Two batters later, Newton belted his fifth round tripper to make it a 7-5 lead.

Freshman Connor Kane (1-1) earned the win out of the bullpen and Cyle Phelan nailed down his first save of the season.

Alec DeMartino and Mongero both finished with three hits. Jac Croom homered twice for the second time in his career.

Joe Sprake (0-1) took the loss for the Phoenix.

Luke Stephenson, Cole Reynolds and Tanner Holiman collected two hits apiece while Reynolds connected on his fifth homer of the season. James Broderick hit his second home run of the year.

In the opener, Ryan Sprock's two-run single in the fifth broke a 1-all deadlock for Elon as the Phoenix would go on for a 3-1 win.

Jacob Shafer (5-2) had a four-game winning streak halted. Lifrieri and Stephenson both homered for their respective teams.

Liam Dabagian (2-0) picked up the win for the Phoenix in relief.

The Seahawks visit NC State on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start at Doak Field.
