Sandy Hawks Clipped Twice In Sun Belt Play

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW beach volleyball lost a pair of 3-2 decisions on Saturday to Sun Belt Conference rivals College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina at Capt'n Bill's Backyard Bar and Grill.

The losses drop UNCW's record to 9-8 on the season and 1-5 in the Sun Belt.

In the second dual of the day for the Seahawks, it came down to court one with the top pairings playing for the deciding point. Coastal Carolina's Martine Kragholm and Sarah Riedell clinched the win for the Chanticleers, winning in three sets and taking the deciding set, 18-16, from UNCW's Gabby LaPata and Sadie Sharkey.

CCU built a 2-0 lead after winning at the fourth and fifth pairings, but UNCW fought back to post wins at the second and third pairings.

Against the College of Charleston to open the day, CofC's top pair of Lyra Thompson and Gabi Bailey outlasted Sharkey and LaPata in three sets, including a 15-10 win in the tie-breaker.

Ashley Thompson and Bri Haggerty fashioned a straight-set win at the third pairing to give UNCW a 2-1 lead. The Cougars, however, evened the dual with a three-set win at the second pairing and set up Thompson and Bailey to seal the win.

Thompson earned two wins on Saturday to move to within four wins of tying for UNCW's career wins list with 46.

The Seahawks play two more duals on Sunday beginning with Jacksonville at 10:30 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. rematch with Charleston. Admission to the event is free.
