Beach Volleyball Opens With Shutout Of Catawba

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW opened its 2023 season with a 5-0 shutout of visiting Catawba on Sunday in beach volleyball action at Capt'n Bill's Backyard Grill.

The Seahawks won all five matches while allowing double-figures in a set just three times.

Jadyn Barry and Ashley Thompson gave UNCW a 1-0 lead when they topped Catawba's Lauren Shepherd and Devyn Berg in straight sets, 21-9 and 21-11.

Maddy Folks and Bri Haggerty made it a 2-0 lead with a 21-5, 21-6 win at the fourth pairing.

Sarah Thompson, another newcomer to the lineup, teamed with Ellie Bucci to clinch the match with a 21-12, 21-7 win over Maggie Marable and Devyn Berg at the third position.

Lyvia Trimp and Grace Sistrunk won at the second pairing and Sadie Sharkey and Gabby LaPata finished off the season-opening sweep at the top pairing.

The Seahawks also shutout Liberty earlier in the day in an exhibition match.

UNCW visits Columbia, S.C., next weekend, Mar. 10-11, for the Carolina Invitational, hosted by South Carolina. There they will face Tulane and Stephen F. Austin on Friday followed by Stetson and the host Gamecocks on Saturday.
