Baseball Preview: North Carolina A&T

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Following their win at eighth-ranked East Carolina, the Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association action this weekend when they host newcomer North Carolina A&T beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.

UNCW (16-9, 7-2) is tied for second in the league with the College of Charleston and trails league-leader Elon (8-1) by a game in the standings.

The Seahawks and Aggies last met in 2001 and UNCW has won all three games in the brief series.

North Carolina A&T joined the conference in July along with Monmouth, Stony Brook and Hampton, which doesn't field a baseball program. The Aggies were members of the Big South before moving to the CAA.

Tre Williams, a junior infielder, was named CAA Player of the Week earlier this week and he leads his lineup with a .369 batting average, three home runs and 18 runs batted in. He helped the Aggies to a series win last week against defending champion, Hofstra.

The Seahawks downed longtime rival East Carolina, 9-3, on Tuesday in Greenville to earn a sweep of the home-and-home series. Alec DeMartino and John Newton finished with three hits apiece while Luke Craig delivered a career-long 4.1 innings of shutout, one-hit relief.

On Saturday, the Seahawks will host their annual Military Appreciation Day, with all military members will be admitted free when presenting their military ID. UNCW will also don jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game and benefit the Step Up for Soldiers Foundation.
