Allen Tosses Gem To Even Series With Hofstra

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW junior Cooper Allen went the distance on Saturday in a 12-0, run-rule-shortened win over visiting Hofstra in Coastal Athletic Association baseball action at Brooks Field.

UNCW, which snapped a four-game losing skid, raised its record to 21-17 on the season and 10-7 in the league. The Pride fell to 12-20 and 7-10 in the CAA.

Allen (6-2) set a career-high with 11 strikeouts, scattered four hits, and walked none in recording his first career shutout. It was his third game this season with double-digit strikeouts.

Mason Hughes finished with two hits and scored twice while Kevin Jones knocked in four runs, including three on a home run in the eighth. Danny O'Brien ended the game with a pinch-hit three-run homer to right in that same inning.

Hofstra starter Chris Bedford (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, in 2.2 innings.

Danny Corona had the Pride's lone extra-base hit, a double, in the second inning.

UNCW drew nine walks and four hit batters. Howie Rickett was hit a school-record tying three times. The record was set in 1978 by former Seahawk and longtime head coach Mark Scalf at East Carolina.

The series concludes on Sunday with the rubber game starting at noon.
