Ferguson, Hobbs Set School Records

LYNCHBURG, Virginia – Sophomore sprinter Nasiah Ferguson and senior distance runner Kendall Hobbs set school records as the UNCW women's indoor track and field team concluded action in Liberty's 9th Annual Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Saturday at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

Ferguson, from Hendersonville, N.C., clocked a 39.91 to finish second in the Women's 300 Meters, breaking the 17-year-old school record. Teammate Janiyah Fields placed fifth with a time of 40.08, good for third all-time in the event.

"Nasiah and Janiyah were in the same heat and they made a commitment to each other to push the race from the gun," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "I'm proud of both of them."

Hobbs, from Beavercreek, Ohio, broke the school record in the Mile Run with a time of 5:01.25. "Kendall was on a mission today. She took the lead after the first 400m and never looked back. She was ready and earned every second of that performance."

In other action, senior Jayda Hunter came in fourth in the Triple Jump with a season-best leap of 40.00.75. Hunter now owns the top mark in the Colonial Athletic Association with the conference meet just two weeks away.

In the Women's Distance Medley Relay, the quartet of Gretchen Bingham (1200m), Caitlin Peck (400m), Taylor Rand (800m) and Ashley Robey (1600m) posted a time of 13:15.66.

"We're excited about the opportunity to test out the relay distances," added Klaves. "This is the first time we've run the event this season. We had great efforts across the board that help put down a competitive time for us heading into the conference meet."

In the 200 Meters, graduate student Brynn Sheffield ran a time of 24.93 for second all-time in the race. "Brynn ran a complete race to break 25 seconds indoors for the first time. She got out, held pace and won her heat after a great final straight away."

Klaves was pleased with the way the Seahawks ended the weekend in Lynchburg.

"To close out the meet, we got four tremendous legs out of our 4x400m Relay. Times will continue to come if we keep competing like that. We are building all the right momentum right now by competing and controlling what we can control."

Schools competing in the meet included Appalachian State, Bryant & Stratton (Va.), Campbell, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Davidson, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Elon, Furman, Georgetown, High Point, James Madison, Liberty, Lynchburg, Maryland, Morgan State, Navy, Penn, Queens, Radford, Richmond, UNCW, VCU, Virginia, VMI, Wake Forest, Western Carolina and William & Mary.

The Seahawks completed their regular season schedule and now begin preparations for the inaugural Colonial Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Feb. 22-23, 2023. Twelve women's teams will compete for the title - Charleston, Delaware, Elon, Hampton, Hofstra, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, UNCW, Northeastern, Stony Brook, Towson and William & Mary.
