Gibbons Leads Way At Brant Tolsma Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Virginia – Freshman Riley Gibbons racked up 2,743 points in the pentathlon to lead UNCW's multis on the opening day of the Brant Tolsma Invitational on Thursday at Liberty's Indoor Track Complex.

Action continues all day Friday on the second day of the three-day meet.

Gibbons (Sunderland, Md.) finished in fifth place out of 10 competitors. Freshman Brylee Montanari (Wilmington, N.C.) came in eighth and junior Carly Mixon (Troy, Mich.) finished ninth.

"The most important part about today was the experience," said Jeff Klaves, UNCW's fourth-year head coach. "Riley, Brylee and Carly all proved to themselves that they are capable of doing the pentathlon. Now, we want to take the quality reps we hit in the meet today and bring more consistent intensity to our practices when we get back to campus.

"We are proud of their opening marks today. The conversations today before, during, and after each event were all so meaningful and we look forward to all three of them building on today's performance"

The threesome will continue to train with hopes of competing in the pentathlon at the inaugural CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for Feb. 22-23, 2023, at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
