Women's Track and Field Joe Browning

Seahawks Open Indoor Season This Weekend

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women's indoor track and field team makes its season debut on Saturday by participating in North Carolina's Dick Taylor Challenge.

The meet on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, will be contested at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, N.C., and is the first of four in-season meets for the team, which enters its fourth season under Head Coach Jeff Klaves. The season also features the inaugural Colonial Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 22-23, 2023, at the Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

With the COVID-19 pandemic in the rear view mirror, it marks the first time the Tar Heels have hosted a home meet since Jan. 11, 2020. The Eddie Smith Field House has been upgraded, including new lighting, renovated offices and team space.

The field events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., with the track events to follow at approximately 12:30 p.m.

"Having high caliber meets on the schedule and being competitive at the ECAC meet last year was a huge breakthrough for our program and proved that we can compete on the national level," said Klaves.

The Seahawks and Tar Heels will be joined by Duke, NC Central, East Carolina, Wake Forest, High Point, Old Dominion and others.

Senior Courtney Lines and junior Jayda Hunter will anchor the team. Lines captured first place in the Women's Long Jump competition at the 2022 ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston and Hunter logged back-to-back personal bests to wind up fifth in the Women's Triple Jump at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.

Lines and Hunter set school records in those categories and pole vaulter Elise Hall and sprinter Brynn Sheffield gained valuable experience in Beantown.

Following Saturday's season-opening meet, the Seahawks head to Lynchburg, Va., next week to compete in the Brant Tolsma Invitational from Jan. 19-21, 2022.
