Fields Jets To Oregon For USATF U20 Meet

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW women's track and field freshman Janiyah Fields continues her remarkable rookie season this weekend when the Cary, N.C. sprinter competes in the U.S. Track & Field U20 Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

The talented Fields will race in the first round of the 200 Meters at 6:24 p.m. ET on Saturday against a group of 22 other collegiate sprinters. The finals take place later that night at the University of Oregon's top-flight facility.

The top two performers in the event earn a spot on Team USA for the U20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, on Aug. 1-6, 2022.

Fields set a UNCW freshman record by clocking a 24.35 in the 200 Meters prelims at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on May 6, 2022. It represents the second best time in school history behind Maleena Reid (23.92 on Feb. 2, 2013). Fields also reached the finals of the 100 and 200 Meters and ran a leg on the runner-up 4x100 relay team at the CAA meet.

Fields is one of five CAA track and field student-athletes competing in Eugene. William & Mary's Emily Ervin (200m/400m), Arianna Deboer (5,000m) and Luke Ellewood (3,000m, 5,000m) and Hofstra's Zach Van Houten (5,000m) are also making the cross-country trip.

"Janiyah has had an incredible freshman year," said UNCW Head Track & Field Coach Jeff Klaves. "She's earned this opportunity to be on the national stage and compete at the USATF U20 Championships.

"We're so proud of her for this accomplishment. She's consistently improved all year because of the time and commitment she continues to put into her craft. Moments like this are everything for our program. We're committed to an earned-based, hard-working mentality that sets goals and goes after them."

Fields is looking forward to visiting Hayward Field and Tracktown USA for the first time and facing a strong group of sprinters.

"Being able to compete at U20 with other young athletes in the nation and being in a stadium where athletes have hit incredible PRs and set records, feels surreal to me," said Fields. "I never thought I would be competing at this level in my first year and I'm taking in every moment from what I've done this season and ending my freshman year with a meet that I won't forget.

"This season has been filled with great surprises. Qualifying for this meet means the most to me. I'm seeing my potential in this sport and living the vision that my Dad repeatedly told me I would be doing in college.

"My goal for the meet - and the only goal I had when competing throughout this season - is to have fun and do what I know best. The training will show in my performance. It's important to not overthink things, but just follow the training."
