Seahawks Travel to Towson for Road Series

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The first leg of a six-game Colonial Athletic Association road trip awaits the UNCW softball team, who travels to Towson for a three-game set against the Tigers at Tiger Softball Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader starting at noon followed by a Sunday matinee at 1 p.m. All games will be streamed on FloSports with live stats available on UNCWStats.com

The Seahawks carry a 22-7 overall record into play and are 4-2 in the CAA after winning series against Delaware and James Madison over the first two conference weekends. The Tigers, meanwhile, are 11-20 this season with a 1-5 record in the circuit.

UNCW's dynamic pitching staff has continued its dominant stretch when it's mattered most. Through six league games, the Seahawks' 1.59 ERA is over a run lower than the next closest team while their 40 punchouts are the most among the CAA's eight softball teams.

The Seahawks' style of play has proved to be a tough out thus far. With the second-highest fielding percentage (.967), most stolen bases (18), and most sac-hits (6) in conference games, UNCW's small-ball approach has them only a half-game behind CAA leader Hofstra entering the weekend.

Leadoff second baseman Tayler Vitola has reached based in eight-straight games while power-hitting first baseman Janel Gamache will put her season-high six-game hit streak on the line at Towson.

Last time out, the Tigers carried a two-run lead into the fifth inning before Georgetown exploded for eight runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza, to lose, 9-6, at home.

Towson's staff is led by senior Julia Jackson, who ranks second in the conference with 100.1 innings in 20 appearances this season. The Simi Valley, Calif., native is 8-8 with a 4.67 ERA and has allowed the most hits (116) and home runs (11) this season in the conference.

Junior right fielder Briana Ramirez leads the Tigers near the top of the order with a .371 batting average that ranks seventh in the CAA. Ramirez enters riding a six-game hitting streak, including a two-hit performance against the Hoyas on Wednesday.

In Towson's three-hole, sits sophomore shortstop Mackenzie Lake. The Pittsburg, Pa., product is hitting .330 with three homers and 18 RBI after being named to the All-CAA Rookie Team last season.

GAME NOTES: The Seahawks have won three of the last four meetings versus the Tigers … UNCW makes its first appearance to Towson, Md. since 2018 … UNCW's 1.87 staff ERA ranks 15th in the country … Gamache and Morgan Britt each have six hits in their last five games … Britt and Vitola have accounted for eight of the 18 stolen bases in CAA games … The Seahawks boast a 1.59 ERA in CAA games.
