Five-Run Fifth Clinches Series for Seahawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior Madison Biddle's three-run double highlighted a five-run fifth inning to propel UNCW to a Coastal Athletic Association softball series-clinching 8-2 win over visiting Charleston on a windy Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks (18-13, 6-2 CAA) claimed their second CAA series of the season and will go for the sweep of the Cougars (16-20, 7-4 CAA) in Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m.

Top-of-the-order hitters Cassidy Relay and Emily Whitwell combined for six of UNCW's season-high-tying 14 hits along with three runs and an RBI from Whitwell to score the first run of the go-ahead fifth inning.

Freshman Ava Brookshire's first career home run bounced over the left-center wall to give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead after Charleston's Halle Cannon and UNCW's Sierra Persinger drove in runs over the first two innings.

The Seahawks registered six hits in the fifth, including a lead-off pinch-hit double off the bat of Averie Daughtry that was succeeded by three straight infield singles, including Whitwell's go-ahead single.

With two outs, Biddle broke the game open with a shot to center just over the outstretched glove of Charleston center fielder Haley Wolsky to clear the bases. Freshman Becca Merrick then legged out an infield single as Biddle hustled to score from second.

UNCW starter Taylor Barlow (3-1) tossed 5.1 innings of two run ball and freshman Camille Hamilton recorded the final five outs for the series win.

Charleston starter Mackenzie Mathis (9-6) tossed six-innings with six earned runs.
