Sandy Hawks Advance To ASUN Semifinals

UNCW will take on FGCU at 12:30 p.m. on Monday on ESPN+

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – UNCW advanced to the semifinals of the AUN Championship tournament on Sunday with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Mercer in the final dual of pool play on Sunday at John Hunt Park.

The Seahawks, who are seeded fourth overall, will face nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast at 12:30 p.m. EST on Monday while top-seeded Stetson plays third-seeded North Florida. The winners advance to the championship dual at 2:30 p.m. on Monday.

The Seahawks ran their record to 25-10 on the season, extending their single-season record-breaking total of wins.

Against Mercer, the Seahawks went to a third set at both the fourth and fifth pairing with Kaley McLaughlin and Jadyn Barry winning 15-13 in the third set to even the dual at 1-all.

Mercer jumped in front after winning a pair of close sets at the second pairing, but UNCW rebounded to even things at 2-all behind Ellie Bucci and Ashley Thompson winning the third pairing, 21-11 and 21-14.

On court one, Mattie Johnson and Grace Sistrunk were pushed to the limit by Mercer's Olivia Boeve and Lex Polychrones, 28-26, in the first set before pushing the Seahawks into the semifinals with a 21-19 win in the clinching second set.

UNCW finished the pool play portion of the tournament with a 4-1 record, losing only to top-seeded Stetson in the tournament opening dual.
The Seahawks and FGCU met once this season, back on Mar. 4, with the Eagles winning 5-0 at the FAU Beach Burrow Bash. The dual will be streamed on ESPN+.
