Sandy Hawks Come Up Short Twice To Ranked Opponents

COLUMBIA, S.C. – UNCW came up short twice on Saturday against a pair of ranked opponents to close out the Carolina Challenge host by South Carolina.

UNCW saw its record slide to 17-7 following a 1-3 weekend while 19th-ranked Stetson improved to 12-12 and South Carolina, ranked 19th, moved to 13-8.

Against Stetson, UNCW took the Hatters to three sets at both the fourth and fifth pairings, but Stetson was able to take both matches. Brianna Haggerty and Kaley McLaughlin lost 15-13 at the fourth pairing while Jadyn Barry and Maddy Folks fell, 15-12.

On Friday, Haggerty became UNCW's single season wins leader with 16 when she teamed with Kaley McLaughlin to edge UAB, 2-1, at the fourth pairing.

The Hatters were able to clinch the dual with a 21-16, 21-11 win at the third pairing.

Folks and Barry drew the Seahawks even with South Carolina by taking the fifth pairing, 21-16 and 21-18, but the Gamecocks swept the top three pairings in straight sets.

The Seahawks take a short trip to Conway, S.C., next weekend for another tournament by the name of the Carolina Challenge, this time hosted by Coastal Carolina. UNCW opens their tournament appearance with an 8 a.m. rematch against South Carolina.
