Beach Volleyball Sweeps Season Openers

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW opened its beach volleyball season with a pair of wins over Catawba and Stevenson on Saturday at Capt'n Bill's Volleyball Facility.

The Seahawks cruised past Catawba in the opener, 4-0, and didn't drop a set. Ellie Bucci and Tessa Rogers, a newcomer, posted an impressive 21-7,21-9, win in the fourth flight.

Against Stevenson the Seahawks again made quick work of their opponent with a 5-0 win. Mattie Johnson and Ashley Thompson fashioned a 21-15, 21-11 win in the top flight.

In the second flight, Sadie Sharkey and Grace Sistrunk, another newcomer, dropped the opening set, but rallied to win the next two, including a 15-10 win in the third set for the dual win.

The three teams will play each other again on Sunday beginning with Catawba and Stevenson opening the day's events at 8 a.m. Stevenson and UNCW meet at 10 a.m. and Catawba and the Seahawks close out the weekend with a noon start.
