Sandy Hawks Take Series From Stevenson


OWINGS MILLS, Md. – UNCW made it two-for-two on the weekend with its second straight 5-0 sweep of Stevenson on Sunday at the Stevenson Beach Courts.

The Seahawks improved to 5-9 with the road win while the Mustangs, who were opening their season this weekend, dropped to 0-2.

Elena Turnbull and Brooke Hanshumaker got the Seahawks off to the sweep with a convincing 21-5, 21-9 in at the fourth pairing and Sadie Sharkey and Casey Goodwin followed suit with a 21-14, 21-7 win at the second pairing.

At the top pairing, Joanmarie (JM) Lewandowski and Ashley Thompson earned a 21-17, 21-12 win as Lewandowski moved into eighth on UNCW's all-time doubles wins list with 27.

Also moving up in the UNCW career records book was Turnbull, who also is now eighth with a .480 winning percentage.

UNCW next competes in the Palmetto Invitational on Apr. 16-17. The Seahawks open their schedule with nationally-ranked South Carolina on Friday at 5 p.m.
