CONWAY, S.C. – Rachel Schaffer and Elena Turnbull posted a 21-11, 21-14 in the third pairings to lift UNCW to a 3-2 win over rival the College of Charleston in college beach volleyball action on Friday at the CCU Beach Volleyball Complex.

With the win, the Seahawks split their Friday duals to move to 2-4 on the season. Earlier in the day, UNCW fell to 13th-ranked South Carolina, 5-0.

"I'm really pleased at how we came out against Charleston, winning the first three matches at the fours, fives, and twos after being swept by them last weekend," said UNCW Associate Head Coach David Fischer. "We had multiple players who couldn't train together due to Covid precautions, but they kept communicating and making adjustments."

In the Charleston dual, Chrissy Augustine and Kristy Witte put the Seahawks in front after winning the fifth pairing, 21-8, 21-17.

Ellie Bucci and Tyla Cutrie upended Mikaela Dougherty and Marie Martinsen in three sets to give UNCW a 2-0 lead.

Shaffer and Turnbull clinched the dual for the Seahawks as they swept Ella Ridinger and Kyra Thompson.

"It was a great turnaround for Ellie (Bucci) and Tyla (Cutrie) at the fours, who had some admitted nerves in the morning match. Kristy (Witte) and Chrissy (Augustine) gave us a scare in the second set going down 13-8 after winning the first set 21-8, but they stuck tough and won in straight sets. Elena (Turnbull) and Rachel (Schaffer) kept to a tight game plan and were crisp and focused throughout the match."

Up next: The Seahawks play 16th-ranked Stetson on Saturday at noon and then close out the weekend with a 4 p.m. start against host Coastal Carolina.
