Beach Volleyball Splits Duals In Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – UNCW split a pair of duals on Saturday at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex, knocking off Erskine before losing to Mercer later in the day.

The Seahawks close out their opening weekend with a 1-3 mark.

"Today, all our pairs made the improvements we talked about last night," said UNCW Associate Head Coach David Fischer. "Rachel Schaffer and Ashley Thompson beat a tough Erskine 1's pair and Tyla Cutrie and Ellie Bucci were smooth and consistent at the 3s — they also fought like champs against Mercer. All in all, lots of things to work on from this weekend, and our lineups are still very fluid. Ready for another great week of training in the warmer weather. "

Against Erskine, Chrissy Augustine and Kristy Witte clinched the match with a 16-14 win in the third set. Rachel Schaffer and Ashley Thompson cruised to a 21-13, 21-9 win at the first pairing.

Mercer was able to sweep the Seahawks in the final dual of the afternoon. Three of the matches went to a third set, but the Seahawks came up short on each court.

The Seahawks return to action against South Carolina and Charleston on March 5.
