Beach Volleyball Splits Opening Duals

CONWAY, S.C. – UNCW split a pair of duals by identical 3-2 scores to open its season on Saturday at Coastal Carolina.

"The split isn't what we're going for but hats off to Serah (O'Keefe) and Rachel (Schaffer) for going 2-0 in their college debut," said UNCW Associate Head Coach David Fischer. Overall, we gained a ton of experience, and we figured out that competition brings out a level of fire that we need to recreate in practice."

The Seahawks won the opener, 3-2, and clinched the dual behind a 21-17, 21-9 sweep by Joanmarie (JM) Lewandowski and Ashley Thompson. Reagan Evans and Elena Turnbull won the first match of the dual and Serah O'Keefe and Rachel Schaffer made it 2-0 UNCW with a win at the fifth pairing.

The Chanticleers (3-1), however, gained a split by winning the second dual. The teams split the first two matches and Coastal took a 2-1 lead winning at the third pairing. CCU closed out the win winning on the second pairing.

The Seahawks next compete at the Bears Beach Blast hosted by Mercer. UNCW plays Chattanooga and host Mercer at 9 and 11 a.m., respectively on Feb. 29.
