Beach Volleyball Opens At Coastal Carolina

Seahawks open their fifth season on the beach

WILMINGTON, N.C. – With a roster featuring nine newcomers, UNCW's beach volleyball program opens its fifth season of competition on Saturday in Conway, S.C., with a dual doubleheader against Coastal Carolina.

"It's been a fun training block the past five weeks, and we're healthy and ready to compete," said UNCW Associate Head Coach David Fischer. "Some newcomers are pushing to make an impact, including freshmen Ashley Thompson, Rachel Schaffer, Serah O'Keefe and grad transfer Casey Goodwin. Competition for making the lineup has been fierce, so our job of making pairs has been the most challenging it's ever been—our depth gets stronger each year."

Heading up the returning segment of the roster is Lexie Hamilton, a sophomore, who compiled a 10-13 mark in 2019, playing among the top three pairings in all duals. Hamilton was named a preseason player-to-watch by the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association.

Raquel Rooney and Brynn Montgomery are the top returning winners, both posting 12-12 records a year ago. As a pairing, the duo went 11-12, playing predominantly in the third and fourth pairings.

Joanmarie (JM) Lewandowski was 10-14 in 2019, including a 9-2 mark in the fourth pairing.

"Our lone senior, Raquel (Rooney), is ready for the big stage. She keeps improving, and with Brynn (Montgomery), Lewandowski and Hamilton all high up in the lineup, we've got experience to help guide our newer players.

"We traded some close battles with Coastal last year, and home court advantage proved to be the difference. We'll see if we can change that this weekend."

The Seahawks and Chanticleers are set for an 11 a.m. first serve on Saturday with the second dual scheduled for 1 p.m.
