Schemmel Shines In UNCW Sweep

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW opened the new year with a pair of impressive efforts as the Seahawk women swept visiting Campbell (172-122) and UNC Asheville (216-81) on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.

The Seahawks, who won their first two dual meets of the season, ran their record to 2-5 while Campbell, which had won its last four outings, dipped to 5-3 and UNCA fell to 3-5.

Heading up the strong afternoon for the Seahawks was senior Kyra Schemmel with three event wins. Schemmel won the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 10:26.17 and later rallied twice to win the 500 Free (5:05.91) and 200 IM (2:08.50). In the 500 win, she trailed going into the final 100 yards before taking over and holding off Campbell. Schemmel did so again in the 200 IM when she took the lead in the final 50 yards.

Fellow senior Meagan Johnson gave UNCW wins in the 100 and 200 Breaststrokes, posting times of 1:05.83 and 2:22.08, respectively.

Adding a pair of event wins was sophomore Faith Pilcher first in the 50 Free (23.81) and later in the 100 Free (51.99 seconds)). Pilcher also swam the final leg of the winning 400 Free Relay which included sophomore Evan Arsenault and seniors Annie Shirk and Meghan Lahr.

Rounding out the multiple-event winners was senior Adyson Lowe, who swept the 1-meter (266.40 points) and 3-meter (256.30) boards.

The Seahawks visit Davidson on Jan. 12 for men's and women's meets against the Wildcats.
