Beach Volleyball Preview: CCSA Championship Tournament

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW beach volleyball program makes its postseason debut at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association on Apr. 21, when it faces 2016 national runner-up Florida State at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Cartersville, Ga.

"There is a lot of excitement going into this weekend with our first opportunity to compete in the CCSA beach championship," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "We have already played three of the four teams in our pool, so I feel our players will have some confidence in knowing what to expect from our opponents. FSU will be a challenge but also a worthwhile opportunity for our program to compete against the arguably best beach team on the east coast."

Florida State enters the tournament, which has an automatic bid to the National Championship Tournament, ranked fourth in the nation with a record of 21-7. Joining the Seahawks (13-9) and Seminoles in Pool A are 10th-ranked FIU (20-12), 12th-ranked South Carolina (21-7) and Tulane (20-11).

UNCW posted 13 wins in its second season of competition, topping last year's total of 11. Heading into the tournament the pairing of Tanna Aljoe and Nicole Lott has produced a 12-8 record. At the second pairing, Emily Corrigan and Katie McCullough own an 11-9 mark while Maddy Kline and Raquel Rooney are 10-9. UNCW's winningest pair on the season played in the fourth position as Sydney Alvis and Sarah Kelly went 15-5.

The Seahawks have familiarity with South Carolina (0-2), Tulane and FIU (0-1) but did not play FSU this season.

There will be two days of pool play (Fri.-Sat.) and the semifinals will be on Sunday with 9 a.m. first serves. The championship match follows at 1 p.m. on Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN3.com.
