Beach Volleyball Splits Two At Beach Blast

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW pair of Sydney Alvis and Sarah Kelly continued their strong play this season as they won both their matches while the Seahawks split a pair of duals at the Beach Blast on Saturday at Dig & Dive.

The Seahawks opened with a 4-1 win over Mercer before dropping a 3-2 decision to the College of Charleston. Box Scores: Mercer | CofC

"Mercer was an absolute battle with our #2s, #3s, and #4s winning in three sets," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Bella (Borgiotti) and Halle (Hunt) made their debut at our five's pairing and had a solid two-set win against Mercer to give the team the 4-1 victory.  Against Charleston, Tanna (Aljoe) and Nicole (Lott), and (Sydney) Alvis and (Sarah) Kelly played tough defensively to earn the wins in two sets. The other matches could have gone either way, but we came up just a bit short. Overall, the entire event was a huge success with in good turnout of energetic fans. We're looking forward to celebrating our lone senior and grad students tomorrow as they play their final home duals."

In the opener, UNCW cruised to the win, posting wins in pairs 2-5 with only a loss in the top match preventing a Seahawk shutout.

Against CofC, the Cougars jumped to a 2-0 lead winning the four and five pairs before Alvis and Kelly posted a 21-13, 24-22 win. A UNCW loss in the second pairs clinched the win for Charleston.

The Blast continues on Sunday with the Seahawks playing Stevenson at 10:30 a.m. and nationally-ranked South Carolina at noon.
