Beach Volleyball Splits Pair With Nationally-Ranked Opponents

 
ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida – UNCW dropped a 4-1 decision to eighth-ranked Georgia State before rebounding for a 3-2 win over tournament host 13th-ranked North Florida in the Seahawks' season-opening tournament, the UNF Sand Classic, on Saturday.

"We are excited the season is underway and playing Georgia State gave us glimpses of how good we could be this season," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Sydney (Alvis) and Sarah (Kelly) won a pair of high-scoring third sets today, showing a lot of grit and composure. In the UNF match, we got strong outings from (Nicole) Lott and (Tanna) Aljoe as well as (Katie) McCullough and (Emily) Corrigan. We  played with more rhythm against UNF."

In the opener, the pair of Sydney Alvis and Sarah Kelly rallied for a three-set win (19-21, 21-18, 20-18) giving the Seahawks their lone win of the dual.

Against UNF, UNCW picked up wins in the top-two pairs with Tanna Aljoe and Nicole Lott winning 21-17, 21-19 at the ones. Emily Corrigan and Katie McCullough won in convincing fashion (21-13, 21-12) at the two-position and Alvis and Kelly moved to 2-0 on the season following their 21-16, 19-21, 22-20 win in the fourth position.

The Seahawks will close out their opening weekend on Sunday with Spring Hill and FIU at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively.
